READY TO ADOPT?

When you arrive at Rescue Village, you can visit the adoption areas.  If you see an animal you would like to get to know better or have questions about a particular animal, talk with our receptionists and complete a Meet Your Match survey (if you haven't done so in advance) so we can help you decide which animals might be the best match for you. An adoption counselor will then review and discuss your survey with you.

Next step? We'll introduce you to the animal(s) who tickled your fancy in a get-acquainted room so you can both get to know each other better. If you decide to move forward you will receive counseling about how to smoothly transition your newly adopted loved one into your home. We urge you to ask questions.

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

  • If you are planning on adopting a dog and you already have another dog in the household, it is required to have a dog meet and greet as well to ensure a good match. This can be arranged after you have filled out a profile and have met with the animal in a room with an adoption counselor.
  • If you are adopting a cat, to get him or her home safely, you must bring a secure carrier from home or you may purchase a cat box carrier for $5.00.
  • If you are renting, you might need landlord approval before bringing an animal home. We do not contact your landlord for you so you will need to personally ensure you have this approval before bringing the animal home.
  • The adoption process is different for our barn animals. If interested in adopting a barn animal, please contact our Barn Manager at (440) 338-4819 ext. 12 or barn@rescuevillage.org. There is a more extensive application for the adoption of barn animals. Learn more here.
  • Please make sure to research and understand your local laws regarding pet ownership.
  • You must also bring a leash if adopting a dog or purchase one from our general store. We also recommend sensible harnesses for our dogs. These can be purchased from our general store at the time of adoption.
  • We feed Purina products to our cats and dogs. We recommend starting them on this diet and transitioning them over to another food (if you choose) over the course of several days. We offer many of the Purina products at our general store.
  • After a successful dog meet and paperwork has been processed, it is NOT recommended to take both dogs home in the same car. Arrangements should be made for separate transportation.
  • New adoption showings stop one hour before the shelter closes to the public. Please be sure to arrive accordingly.

Once you have made the decision to adopt a new pet, we will do all of the related paperwork including: the completion of an Adoption Agreement, providing you with a copy of the animal's medical information, registering your new pet's microchip to your name, issuing a county license (for dogs only), and giving you a coupon for a free initial veterinarian visit for your newly adopted pet within the next 3 weeks at a participating vet.
