Blizzard Bag Food Drive: Help Seniors This Winter

The Lake County Council on Aging is partnering with Subaru dealers, the Lake County Senior Services Coalition members, and the Alliance for Working Together to support Lake County’s seniors this winter through the Blizzard Bag Food Drive. This initiative aims to collect READY-TO-EAT, non-perishable food items for emergency “Blizzard Bags.”

Why Your Help Matters

The Meals on Wheels (MOW) program by the Lake County Council on Aging provides daily nutritious meals, companionship, and critical safety checks to homebound seniors. However, winter weather or emergencies can interrupt these essential deliveries.

To ensure seniors remain nourished and safe during these times, Blizzard Bags are filled with 2-3 days’ worth of emergency food. These bags offer a critical lifeline for seniors who cannot stock their own emergency food supplies.

Preferred Food Items

We are requesting shelf-stable, ready-to-eat food items that can be consumed without additional preparation. Preferred items include:

  • Peanut Butter (a highly requested item)
  • Single-serve soups
  • Canned pasta, chili, or stew
  • Cheese or peanut butter crackers
  • Packaged dried fruit, nuts, or trail mix
  • Single-serve protein drinks
  • Canned tuna or chicken
  • Boxed drinks and juice boxes
  • Cereal or individual packets of oatmeal
  • Granola and cereal bars
  • Canned vegetables and fruit
  • Applesauce, fruit cups, and pudding cups

Note: Peanut butter and single-serve containers that may be opened without a can opener are highly preferred.

Help Us Help Seniors

By donating to the Blizzard Bag Food Drive, you are helping to combat hunger, isolation, and uncertainty among Lake County’s seniors. These emergency food bags ensure that even when weather conditions or emergencies prevent deliveries, seniors have the nutrition and support they need.

Together, we can make this winter a little brighter and safer for our homebound neighbors.

Join us on December 18th and bring hope to seniors this winter!
