Altered Church
A Painesville faith community that has cared for neighbors across Lake County since 2016 - and an Adventure Subaru community partner since 2025.
What is Altered Church?
Altered Church is a faith community at 1289 Mentor Avenue in Painesville, Ohio, serving Painesville and Lake County since 2016. Through its outreach ministry, Altered Cares, the church has walked alongside thousands of individuals and families with food, basic necessities, shoes, Christmas gifts, and winter coats, welcoming everyone regardless of background or circumstance.
Adventure Subaru, a family-owned Subaru retailer in Painesville, Ohio, first worked with Altered Church in 2025, providing coats for the church's fall coat distribution. In 2026, Adventure Subaru is the sponsor of Coats for Our Neighbors, a Subaru Love Promise event that puts 300 brand-new winter coats into the hands of children and families in need.
Practical care for our neighbors
Altered Church's outreach is simple and practical: a warm meal, a coat, a kind word. Here's what that looks like, and why a new winter coat matters so much in Lake County.
Altered Cares
Altered Cares is the church's community outreach ministry. It has provided food, basic necessities, shoes, Christmas gifts, and care and compassion to thousands of individuals and families since the church began. Anyone who needs help can reach the care team through a help request form on the Altered Church website, and a member of the team follows up.
The need in Lake County
Many of the families Altered Church serves are working multiple jobs to keep up with housing and food costs, which leaves little for seasonal clothing. For their children, a winter coat or good footwear often isn't in the budget. Northeast Ohio winters are hard, and going without proper outerwear affects school attendance, health, and a child's ability to focus and feel confident among their peers.
Why a new coat matters
Many of the children Altered Church works with have never received a brand-new piece of clothing. A coat of their own, new and in their size, tells a child that someone outside their home sees them and cares about them. It means walking into school on a cold January morning looking and feeling like every other kid in class. For parents, it's one less burden to carry.

Subaru Loves to Help
The Subaru Love Promise is Subaru of America's national commitment to showing love and respect to all people at every interaction - and to backing that commitment through five pillars. Subaru Loves to Help is the pillar focused on supporting neighbors in need, and Coats for Our Neighbors is one of our Subaru Loves to Help events.
Our Subaru Loves to Help work also includes the national program with Operation Warm, which brings brand-new coats to children at Project Hope for the Homeless every January. Coats for Our Neighbors is a separate, local event: every coat is brand-new and goes free of charge to a child or family here in Lake County.
