Subaru Loves Pets Initiative: October Focus
Each October, we dedicate our efforts to the Subaru Loves Pets initiative, focusing on supporting shelter animals. During this time, Subaru retailers, including Adventure Subaru, provide grants through the ASPCA to local shelters like Community Cats. These grants help cover essential costs such as veterinary care, adoption preparation, and other crucial expenses to ensure that shelter pets find loving homes.

The ASPCA reports that approximately 6.5 million animals entered U.S. shelters last year alone, where many waited for the chance to experience the love of a family. Community Cats Adoption Process
Community Cats is committed to finding the perfect match between cats and their forever homes. The organization’s thorough screening process ensures that both the adopters and their new feline friends enjoy a harmonious life together.
The journey begins with an application. This form gathers essential information about the prospective adopter, including details about the household and any resident pets. By understanding the home environment, Community Cats can better determine which cat or kitten would thrive in that particular setting.
A meet and greet is a mandatory step in the adoption process. Potential adopters are encouraged to bring all family members to meet the cat or cats, providing an opportunity for everyone to interact. During this meeting, volunteers share information about the cats and observe the interactions between the cats and the adopters. Questions and concerns are welcome, and expectations can be discussed openly.
At the time of adoption, each cat goes home with an adoption packet. This packet includes the cat's health records, microchip registration details, and advice on how to help the new family member settle in. If the cat needs additional vaccinations, information for scheduling an appointment is also provided.
Community Cats' website offers a wealth of information on cat and kitten care, with handouts that cover a variety of topics. These resources are available both online and in print, and they can be included in the adoption packet. The organization is ready to assist adopters in selecting the necessary supplies to welcome their new pet. Partner stores, where adoptions are often finalized, offer coupons to help new adopters get started. The Kitty Swag Bag, provided with each adoption, includes a sample of the cat’s current food, along with an assortment of toys and treats. Foster parents may also send along a favorite toy, bed, or blanket to help the cat adjust to its new home.
Follow-up is a crucial part of the adoption process. Community Cats checks in with adopters to see how the acclimation process is progressing. Updates are greatly appreciated, and adopters are encouraged to share photos and stories of their new furry family member. The organization provides multiple ways for adopters to reach out with updates, questions, or concerns.
In some cases, a cat may struggle to adjust to its new environment, or adopters may feel uncertain about tasks such as trimming nails. Community Cats' volunteers are available for in-home visits to observe the cat in its new surroundings and to offer advice. They can assist with nail trims or demonstrate how to handle or medicate the cat. If further help is needed, the organization has a network of veterinary professionals who can assist with medical or behavioral issues.

About Community Cat Companions
We are a small organization in Ohio that facilitates targeted trap-neuter-return programs to stabilize local feral cat colonies. We are also an advocate for the humane treatment of these “community cats,” and seek to raise public awareness of feral colonies and their needs.
Trap-Neuter-Return (T-N-R) is a spay/neuter initiative to reduce the feral cat population by managing existing colonies and preventing future litters. T-N-R is the most effective and humane method of controlling populations of feral cats.
Laws/Ordinances don't always allow for humane treatment of feral cats/kittens. Networking with people involved in T-N-R, animal rescue, and with veterinarians and spay/neuter clinics will help to gain support and credibility for your cause. As people are educated about feral cats and understand their value to a community, it becomes easier to implement programs that benefit them. It takes time and patience but the results are worth it.
