The 2026 Subaru Outback

You never forget your first Outback.

For some of us, it was the car that carried us into the wilderness, across snow-covered trails, or just safely through years of school pickups and weekend getaways. For others, it was our first real glimpse of what a car could be when it wasn’t just trying to be a car.

Now, Subaru is turning the page—and writing a bold new chapter in the Outback story.

A New Look for an Icon

At this year’s New York International Auto Show, Subaru pulled the cover off the 2026 Subaru Outback, and it’s clear from the first glance: this SUV is stepping into the future while honoring everything that’s made it a legend.

The exterior is stronger, broader, more capable-looking—with new upright lines, textured lower fascia for real-world resistance, and a boxier silhouette that says, “Let’s go somewhere.” Even the headlights have moved—now placed at the outermost corners, subtly signaling just how wide and planted this vehicle really is.

Subaru didn’t just update the look—they evolved the stance. Raised roof rails can now hold up to 800 lbs. when stationary, so yes, that rooftop tent setup? It's not just possible—it’s encouraged. There’s even side-mounted load support, meaning you can hang a hammock between the rails. You read that right: hammock-ready.

A Cabin That Thinks Ahead

Slip inside, and the 2026 Outback feels like it’s been reimagined by people who actually use their cars. Thoughtful materials—like headliner inserts made from recycled bottles—and tech that adapts to how you drive, not the other way around.

The 12.1-inch touchscreen pairs beautifully with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, standard across all trims. There’s a new Calm Mode for peaceful drives, a physical climate control interface for glove-on winter usability, and door bottle holders that fit 32-ouncers without fuss.

It’s a space that feels calm, capable, and considered—like the engineers stopped and asked, “What’s actually useful here?” Then they built it.

Technology That Has Your Back—and Your Front, and Your Sides

Subaru’s latest-generation EyeSight Driver Assist Technology isn’t just watching—it’s actively thinking. With new forward-facing cameras and radar sensors, plus driver-supervised hands-free highway driving up to 85 mph, this Outback is setting the standard for what a midsize SUV can do when safety isn’t optional—it’s expected.

If a driver becomes unresponsive, the new Emergency Stop Assist with Safe Lane Selection can steer to the shoulder, alert emergency services, and even unlock the doors for responders. This isn’t science fiction. It’s Subaru’s reality—coming later this year.

Comfort That Goes the Extra Mile

The new Outback is bigger where it counts:
2-inch taller roofline
34.6 cubic feet of cargo space
Quieter cabin with 10% less wind noise
Low-fatigue seats to reduce sway and improve long-haul comfort

There’s even a new clip near the front passenger seat to hold your charging phone in place. It’s the little things.

Engineered for What’s Next

With your choice of a revised 2.5-liter BOXER® engine or the turbocharged 2.4-liter BOXER® on XT and Wilderness models, the 2026 Outback stays true to its roots with 8.7 inches of ground clearanceX-MODE® off-road control, and—new this year—steering-wheel toggles to adjust terrain modes without taking your eyes off the trail.

The WRX-inspired dual-pinion steering rack gives more natural feedback on winding roads and trailheads alike. This Outback is as happy on dirt as it is on downtown streets.

Adventure Is Just Getting Started

The 2026 Subaru Outback isn’t just a redesign. It’s a reintroduction to everything that matters—comfort, capability, trust, and the freedom to wander further.

It arrives nationwide in late 2025, and when it does, we’ll be here—doors open, coffee hot, ready to introduce you.

Because whether it’s your first Outback or your fifth, this one’s ready to make a new kind of memory.
